How can I get tickets to the New Year's Day Concert in Vienna?

Tickets are now only available through an online lottery, at www.wienerphilharmoniker.at (site in German & English) in January of the preceding year.

What relationship to the Strauss family are Richard Strauss and Oscar Straus?

None! Richard Strauss (1864-1949) was a German composer of tone poem, song and opera fame. A possible source of confusion is his opera, Der Rosenkavalier, which features the Viennese Waltz musically, if very anachronistically! Indeed, when he wrote his Rosenkavalier Waltz, Richard Strauss ‘borrowed’ its opening melody from Josef Strauss’s waltz Dynamiden op.173. Oscar Straus was an operetta composer and a contemporary of Franz Lehár. His most famous works were A Waltz Dream, and The Chocolate Solder.

Where can I Get Scores and Parts?

The Society owns thousands of piano scores and orchestral parts. For orchestral parts please refer to the scores tab which summarises our collection. Much of the material cannot easily be found elsewhere. Please use the feedback form for any specific enquiries and we will always respond, however obscure your enquiry.

Where can I read more about the Strauss Family?

The best book in English is The Strauss family: Portrait of a Musical Dynasty by the Society's Hon. Life President, Peter Kemp. Although this book is now out of print you can still purchase copies from the society at the reduced price of £5 plus postage.
